The Importance of Wheelchairs

Wheelchairs are important aids for people with mobility limitations. Wheelchairs offer a mobility option for people who have difficulty standing and walking. While wheelchairs serve an important role as mobility aids, they also often aid in communication for people with motor disabilities that make it difficult to communicate in other ways. Users may require a head array to control their wheelchair and other devices like computers. Head arrays are often incorporated into the wheelchair's headrest so it is important that the headrest stay in place during use to prevent the controls from shifting.

Given their importance, all components of a wheelchair should be designed and manufactured to ensure that the user is able to enjoy independence. Unfortunantely, wheelchair users are often dissatisfied with low quality and one-size-fits-all design mentality of many wheelchair manufacturers. Low quality, improperly designed components are prone to breaking, potentially posing a risk for teh user and forcing them to waste time and repairing or replacing broken parts. Headrest designs, even for those with a head array, often connect to the chair in only one place. This does not provide enough suport to prevent the position of the controls from shifting, which can make it difficult for the user to control their chair, computer, and other devices. Additionally, having only one support attaching the headrest to the chair results in the forces being concentrated at the connecting point. This leads to accelerated wear and breakage.

Our Product

Our headrest is specifically designed to address the need for durable headrest support. The design features a truss systtem, which is commonly used to distribute the loads on bridges. This design allows the forces on the headrest and its support to be distributed accross the entire truss rather than it being concentrated on a singular support. Our design utilizes inexpensive, off-the-shelf components to make replacing components easy and inexpensive.
